Eva Carneiro: A Disgrace

It was earlier this year when Chelsea released a statement condoning sexism, after club doctor, Eva Carneiro, was exposed to sexist comments from opposing fans. How the tables have turned, as club manager, Jose Mourinho, has taken the decision to demote Eva from her involved role with the first team squad. Stripping her from the bench on match days, relinquishing her from involvement at Chelsea’s Cobham training and basically banishing her into a dark, unpleasant room at the club.

You would think that she had committed an act that had bought the name of Chelsea into disdain. Quite the opposite – she was just doing her job. Running on to provide medical aid to Hazard showed professionalism; her role as a practitioner. Shouldn’t the welfare and safety of players be of the most concern? Obviously not, Mourinho didn’t like that being an extra man down after Courtois’ dismissal, so searched for a scapegoat, and he found one.

Slamming his medical staff as not, ‘understanding the game’. Eva seems to be a punchbag for Mourinho to vent his frustration after registering a draw against Swansea. Abstaining Eva from carrying out her job to its full entirety, radiating the so-called chasm between sexes that society often questions.

It was through Eva’s servitude last season that Chelsea had minimal injuries and galloped their way to Premier League victory. Even Mourinho praised his medical staff for the fine job they were doing, this seems redundant, with Eva’s near enough banishment an example of respect being thrown out of the window.

Although viewing it from the outside, and how you never though the details that make up decisions like this one, it is hard not to make assumptions. A hardworking, loyal employee like Eva being treated like dirt for an apparent blunder. Michael Oliver even beckoned her onto the pitch, he is the conductor in these sort of scenarios, not Mourinho.

The Premier League Doctors’ Group have condemned the actions of Mourinho as ‘unjust.’ While they claim that if Eva had not gone into the pitch she would have been ‘breaching the duty of care.’ Such comments further support the treatment as totally unfair, and further justify how Eva has simply been lambasted by Mourinho, for doing her job and caring about the patient, all be it on a football pitch.

Whether points are lost, during small windows when players are treated with the smallest of knocks, safety comes first. From the outside, Eva deserves a huge apology and to be reinstated full time back into her role. There is this constant onus on money, money, money and getting nothing less than three points. Obviously this is modern day football, but the medical reinforcement behind these more prevalent these hold a place in the modern game. It is a female doctor doing her job, what is wrong with that? This is a reminder of sexism in modern society, and really offers food for thought, it needs to be stamped out for good.
