Everton: The eve of another new season

The long boring summer is over and the new football season is upon us again. Are the Evertonians feeling confident or anxious? It has been a quiet summer at Goodison Park so far with the only acquisitions being Gerard Deulofeu and Tom Cleverley with Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz being released. Evertonians have had to watch all of the other clubs in the Premier League strengthening their squad whilst we have yet to do this.  We are still short of a centre-half, a playmaker and a striker to add some much needed depth to our squad. There has been the constant speculation and 2 failed bids from Chelsea for our talented centre-half John Stones. We need to keep Stones at all costs and build our team around him, he is a future captain of Everton Football Club.

It is difficult to think of possible strikers who would be good enough for Everton but a few names include Charlie Austin or Javier Hernandez or maybe we could try to find a bargain like Swansea did with Michu and Bony. This would then give good competition to Lukaku and keep him on his toes through the season, we could possibly use Kone as bait in any sale as he is not good enough for our team.

There has been good news for the Blues with James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas signing new long-term contracts, Mirallas now has to show some consistency in his performances because he can show moments of brilliance but also be non-existent too in games. The positive then is that we go into the new season with all our stars but we have a small squad and a few injuries could mean we are a little short on numbers.  It is a big season for Roberto Martinez and he has plenty of doubters, can he shut them all up and guide Everton to another top 6 finish and back into Europe.

The early fixtures for the Blues are tough with home games against new boys Watford, Man City and Champions Chelsea with away trips to Southampton and Spurs in the first 5 games. We need to get off to a good start against Watford and then we can go into the games against Southampton and Man City with confidence and belief and I am sure we will get the 3 points in our first game.

The top four in the Premier League will probably be similar to last season as they have the most money and can spend the most strengthening their squad.

My predictions for the new season are:

Champions Chelsea

Runners-Up Manchester City

3rd place Arsenal

4th place Manchester United

3 to go down

Watford

Norwich

Leicester

FA Cup Winners Chelsea

League Cup Winners Manchester City

Champions League Winners Real Madrid

Let’s all have a good season and be positive, it could turn out better than we thought and the transfer window is still open so there is still time for a few last minute transfer deals. Remember Nil Satis Nisi Optimum!
