What Is Needed Most At Liverpool?

  • A Defensive Minded Coach
  • 2 Center Backs
  • 1 Left Back
  • 1 Defensive Midfielder

There has been a lot of talk about a new striker being needed at Liverpool and for those who say this I ask, did you pay attention at all last season?  Liverpool is in dire need of repairing their defense whilst already possessing 6 senior strikers
(granted several need to leave, but leaving comes first before buying). This is literally the worst Liverpool defense in our Premier League history and we spent most of last season shattering every defensive error record held by us. Brendan Rodgers is also considered the worst defensive manager in Liverpool’s modern history, even beating out the likes of Souness and Hodgson. That being said he’s our best attacking minded manager in our modern history and we’ve been playing far too long to his strengths without acknowledging his glaring weaknesses. Liverpool netted 101 goals and racked up the most points in history to not win the league and we managed this achievement due to having a defensive record of an average 13th placed team. It’s time to bring on a man who can help Brendan remain focused on what he does best whilst allowing someone to guide the defensive line and add quality players to the ranks.

It’s a dark time in Liverpool’s defense when Martin Skrtel is your most senior mainstay and our best defensive performer against Real Madrid last season was Kolo Toure. Liverpool needs at least 2 serious additions in the center back role, a left back to compete with Moreno, and a defensive midfielder. It’s time for Liverpool to replace Mascherano, Carragher, and Agger with quality players; that is certainly something we have not done with a clueless Lovren, a mediocre Skrtel, a 33 year old Kolo, Joe Allen, or Lucas Leiva. We have finally replaced Xabi Alonso in the form of a very promising Emre Can who is far better used as a creative midfielder going box-to-box than placed in restrictive defensive roles. Anyone who has paid any attention to him during his career will tell you even though he can get the job done, he is best used going forward and creating play. This is why Leverkusen paired him with Bender to allow him that freedom and why he was the most creative player for Germany during the U21 Euro’s while paired with Geis. Only after we have addressed these tremendous issues can Liverpool even think about splashing cash elsewhere (God forbid it being on Benteke).

Liverpool have already got a decent selection of attacking options in Sturridge, Origi, Ings, and Balotelli, why we are primarily trying to blow money on yet another striker, much less a big man striker is beyond me. After the season Lambert/Balotelli just had it’s clear to see we do not play big man football. That being said there are far better and cheaper available than a ridiculously priced, bang average Benteke. A player so useless he was recently compared to a pole and has been kicked out of the national team by the Belgian manager. If that’s really what you want £32.5m going to then you need to be removed from ever associating with the club and go hang out with the likes of Damien Comolli. If Liverpool wants a big man so badly (even after the season Lambert/Balotelli just had for us) then they should look no further than Bas Dost who stands at a whopping 6’3” and was one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga last season.

Who Should Liverpool Be Targeting?

  • A goalkeeper capable of competing with Mignolet for a starting position
    i.e. Marchetti, Perin, Sportiello
  • A right centre back that is capable of going straight into the starting XI
    i.e. Howedes, Sule, Fonte
  • A solid senior backup option to replace Skrtel, Lovren, and Kolo to compete with Ilori
    i.e. Romagnoli, Rugani, Martin Kelly
  • A left back capable of competing with Moreno for a starting position
    i.e. Mendy, Gaya, Digne
  • A young defensive midfielder to hold the defensive line and be able to reignite attacks
  • i.e. William Carvalho, Kranevitter, Niguez

Luxury Buys (Purchases that can wait till January)

  • A Steven Gerrard replacement
    i.e. Kovacic, Sanson, Tielemans
  • A potentially world-class striker
i.e. Volland, Berardi, Talisca, Gabigol, Ponce
  • Possibly a new winger if Lallana/Markovic don’t hit form
