Steven Gerrard Tribute

After sixteen years, Steven Gerrard’s career at Liverpool Football Club is coming to an end. It has been an amazing journey filled with stunning goals, emotional memories, and endless joyous occasions. Gerrard, otherwise known as Mr. Liverpool or Captain Fantastic, will be irreplaceable. Steven Gerrard is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there will ever be. There’s no doubt that he will be dearly missed by anyone involved with the club.

Liverpool’s number 8 has, over the years, embodied the adjective loyal. At the peak of his career, Gerrard was offered contracts at every major club around the world, but respectfully declined. The Liverpool captain remained faithful to his childhood club. A scouser born and bred, Steven Gerrard is an emblem for Liverpool, both the city and Football club. The Liverpool captain started his career with the club at the age of nine, commencing in the academy. As years passed, Gerrard made his way to the top, breaking into the first team at only 18 years old.  On November 29, 1998, a day that would soon prove to be revolutionary for the club, young Steven Gerrard stepped onto the pitch as a last minute substitute. No expert could have predicted the impact the inexperienced, yet talented, youngster would make in the years to come. Supporters dream of becoming legends for their childhood clubs, Steven Gerrard managed to make that dream his reality. It is a story every supporter finds inspiring and admires, which is why it was easy for Stevie to become a fan favorite rapidly. Today, he remains a fan favorite, and that will never change.

At the age of 23, Steven Gerrard was appointed captain of Liverpool Football Club. He had achieved one of his goals and dreams. After a couple years as captain, the nickname Captain Fantastic stuck. The club has experienced some of its greatest nights under Gerrard’s captaincy. Though Captain Fantastic is responsible for many spectacular matches, most remember the Champions League final in 2005. The sight of Steven Gerrard holding up that trophy was enough to bring any supporter to tears. There have been countless occasions where Liverpool’s number eight lifted the team, each one of them unforgettable.

Saturday, May 16, 2015, is Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield. It’s the moment every Liverpool supporter is dreading. Tears will stream down faces, and Gerrard chants will ring around Anfield. After 16 years, Stevie’s career in the legendary red shirt is coming to a close. Come July, Steven Gerrard will embark on a new adventure, as he will become part of MLS side, LA Galaxy. As unbelievable as it may seem, the Steven Gerrard era is coming to an end. During press conferences, Gerrard revealed his hopes to return to the club in some capacity in the future, but as of now, supporters can only hope.

Every fairy tale has its ending, and now it’s time for this one to have “and it ended happily ever after.” This transition will not be easy; the club is losing its most iconic player. No one will ever be quite like him. Though all strive to be like him, none can replace him. Steven Gerrard will always be Liverpool’s greatest player.
