Adam Phillips is the latest Liverpool youngster to be profiled in the ‘Who Is’ series. Phillips, 17, plays in midfield and mainly features for Neil Critchley’s Under 18s side. His career highlight was receiving a call-up to the first-team for their pre-season tour of America in the summer of 2014.
Phillips, who signed from Championship side Blackburn Rovers as an Under-11, has a knack of scoring sensational free-kicks. This, along with other attributes, has earned him a call up to the England Under-16s side where he has featured in the Victory Shield. He made his debut for the Under-18s as a 15-year-old and last season, he racked up 17 appearances for the Under 18s, where he scored three goals.
He made his first-team debut in July 2014, when he played the second half of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Brondby, but it is not just his footballing ability that made the headlines. Phillips used to be a rider in cycle speedway, until retiring due to footballing reasons. He was even a three-time British speedway champion, and in his last outing for his speedway team Astley and Tyldesley, he scored 19 points out of a possible 20. It certainly looks as if this was the correct decision as he was recently rewarded with his first professional contract for the club.
He seems to always step up to the plate when counted on. On his Under-21s debut against Manchester City, Phillips scored twice in the 4-3 defeat. As well as this, he was the star man as the Reds beat Basel in the UEFA Youth League and Bradford CIty in the FA Youth Cup. Phillips has been a name whispered around to replace Steven Gerrard in that midfield once he departs to LA Galaxy and if he carries on his development than we can certainly be seeing him in a red shirt.
