Tom Brewitt is the latest player to be profiled in the ‘Getting To Know’ series. Brewitt, 18, is a central defender and like many of his peers at the Liverpool academy in Kirkby, he has played for his country. He has been with his boyhood club since the age of 10, and looks up to former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, as well as sporting icons such as Fabio Cannavaro and Carlos Puyol.
Brewitt, a lifelong Liverpool fan was initially turned down when he went for a trial, but then made heads turn two years later which ultimately led to his signing. Eight years later, he is still developing and impressing the backroom staff. This has led to him training with the first team on many occasions, featuring alongside players such as Steven Gerrard.
He currently is captain of Liverpool’s Under 18s side and has even featured for the Under 19s side in the UEFA Youth League. He has featured five times for Neil Critchley’s Under 19s, notably scoring against Real Madrid in a 3-2 win in October. Primarily a centre-back, he is able to play on either the left or the right of the back four. During the 2013-14 season, Brewitt made 20 appearances, scoring once against Stoke in November 2013.
Brewitt is one of many Liverpool youngsters to feature for his country, England. He made his international debut in September 2012, featuring for the England Under 16s in a Victory Shield match against Nothern Ireland. His last game for the Under 16s came six months later, were he captained the side against Chile in March 2013. Overall, he played five times, scoring once and only being on the losing side on one occasion.
In November 2013, Brewitt made his debut for the England Under 17s in a match with Armenia. Like in the Under 16s, Brewitt has scored once, vs Gibraltar in an 8-0 win, and has only last once in his six games as a player. A knee injury halted his career so far, meaning he hasn’t played since he captained the side against Portgual in February 2014, but is looking to force his way back into international action with the England Under 18s.
