Champions haven’t won at Anfield since 2007 | Liverpool v Leicester preview

Liverpool play host to Premier League Champions Leicester this weekend – on Saturday the 10^th of September – and when it comes to getting one over last season’s champions Liverpool tend to do well.

Liverpool have not walked away empty handed from a fixture against the reigning champions when playing at Anfield since losing 1-0 to Manchester United at the end of 2007.

Since then The Reds have managed to beat Manchester United in both 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, overcome Chelsea 2-0 in 2010/11, achieve draws against Manchester United and Manchester City in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, defeat both Manchester clubs the following two seasons and, finally, last season, snatch a point against Chelsea.

Liverpool did enjoy having a certain Uruguayan striker in their ranks from 2010 right up until the 2014/15 season but Luis Suarez only played an integral part in Liverpool’s 2-2 stalemate in 2012 against Man City when he scored an exquisite free kick I’m sure you’ve all seen on the BT and Sky Sport promotional videos.

Last season’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield could be viewed as a poor result, when considering the form of Hiddink’s men that season, but after going behind from an admittedly wonderful Eden Hazard goal, it could also be considered an admirable comeback against a side that has caused us some trouble over the years. Jurgen Klopp must have been a relieved man last May when Christian Benteke powered home a late header after a cross by Sheyi Ojo, capitalising on an Asmir Begovic mistake.

The next contestant is unlikely-champions Leicester City. Of late, Liverpool have struggled against defensive sides that are hard to break down and last season The Foxes epitomised that ideal but, with the sale of N’Golo Kante, Liverpool’s debut at the new-look Anfield looks to be a positive one.

Liverpool and Leicester go into the fixture with almost identical records following the first three weeks of Premier League fixtures, both clubs winning, drawing and losing – Jurgen Klopp’s men conceding six times and Claudio Ranieri’s just three times.

Last season, Liverpool were one of only two sides to defeat Leicester in the Premier League; doing so at this weekend’s venue. Benteke scored the only goal that day. The all-time head-to-head record reads 43 wins for Liverpool, 37 for Leicester and 24 times the clubs shared points but this weekend’s visitors haven’t won at Anfield since the 2000/01 season.

Sadio Mane was concern for Jurgen Klopp as he was apparently injured on international duty with Senegal but has confirmed himself he will be available. However, Liverpool are to be without new Ragnar Klavan, following an injury setback whilst on duty with Estonia. Perhaps a golden opportunity for Mamadou Sakhotelli?

Leicester aren’t without their injury worries, though, as they look to be without Kasper Schmeichel, Jeffrey Schlupp and new boy Nampalys Mendy (the DM they signed when Kante joined Chelsea).
