Marouane Fellaini put in another sturdy, impressive performance in a match of the greatest importance to reaffirm quotes from ex-United boss, David Moyes ahead of the Manchester Derby, that the Belgian midfield always had quality, just needed confidence.
David Moyes wrote in his Sunday Mail column that Fellaini had spoken with him, while the pair were at United, when ‘times were tough’. Yet he said the 26-year-old’s performances of late have showed that he can be an important player in the rebuilding of Manchester United.
Fellaini failed to score in his first season at United but netted his first goal when he came on as a substitute, scoring in fantastic style.
Moyes made Fellaini his only summer signing and came under huge pressure for the signing which failed to show change from his management at Everton, from where Fellaini was bought. But Fellaini is finally showing his quality; “I’ve watched him in the last two games and he has been first class. He’s had an influence on the games, which is what you look to your bigger players to do. And I think he’s played an important part in helping United gain some momentum going into today’s Manchester derby.”
“There were times last season, when things were tough, when we spoke. But I told him then that he would become a top United player if he continued to work hard.
“I’m delighted he’s settled down now and he’s beginning to be appreciated for what he is – a fine footballer who was definitely worth the effort as well as the money.”
