Tottenham arrived at St James’ Park in low spirits after a string of disappointing performances. However, opponents Newcastle found themselves in a similar position, perhaps worse, with fans boycotting the club, leading to a number of empty seats.
Both sets of fans that turned up seemed in good spirit, but the game started quietly, with the first ten minutes bringing little excitement to St James’. This quite spell didn’t last for long though, and Tottenham began to find their feet in the game, which produced a number of lively attacks. The more the game opened up, the more both teams gave each other chances, and it wasn’t long before Newcastle and Tottenham both started to look dangerous. The opening goal came in the thirtieth minute, from a man who hadn’t been in the greatest run of form recently. Nacer Chadli found himself roaming up the pitch, and he went all the way, cut to the left, and fired a fantastic effort from outside the box. The dip and swerve beat Tim Krul with ease, and Nacer Chadli showed a glimpse of himself from earlier this season. The rest of the half was dominated by Spurs, but no real opportunities for goal presented themselves, and the half ended a draw.
The rather quiet end to the first half was juxtaposed abruptly, when Jack Colback scored nineteen seconds after the start of the second half. This caught Tottenham off guard, but it didn’t take long for Spurs to find their feet again, and the battle continued. Tottenham weren’t looking likely to score when they did, and a free kick from Eriksen seemed too far too shoot. This was confirmed when Eriksen whipped in a ball that nearly caught Nabil Bentaleb, but instead, narrowly missed him. This surprised Krul, and the ball from Eriksen ended up going in, and Tottenham regained the lead in an unlikely scenario. The game carried on with Spurs on top, but Newcastle continued to fight back against Tottenham’s dominance. The game never looked fully decided at two – one, but as the full time whistle approached there was a sense of finality. However, in another surprising turn of events, Erik Lamela played the ball through to Harry Kane, who finished as suspected. Kane’s goal puts him at thirty overall, and joint top goal scorer in the league with Sergio Aguero.
Newcastle put in a valiant effort, despite their situation, but Tottenham took the win and moved up above Southampton into sixth. Despite this, Tottenham’s position outside the yop four looks cemented this season. But goal scorer Christian Eriksen said post match that the team feel that they can secure a win in each of the remaining games they have in the Premier league, and with a game against Manchester City, anything could still happen in the last few games of the season.
