Gerrard set to leave Liverpool

Liverpool Football Club have announced that Steven Gerrard will leave Liverpool in the summer. With the likely hood of Gerrard going to the MLS, moving to LA Galaxy. Making a similar move to David Beckham, who spent many seasons in America, showing he still had it. He will go to the US in America on a free. The announcement has come after the Leicester draw, where he scored both of Liverpool’s goals. The former England captain has come under a lot of scrutiny, after some poor performances in a Red shirt. However he is Liverpool’s leading goal scorer, with 5 goals.

The 34 year old, who turns 35 in a few months, has played 1569 minutes in the Premier League and 471 appearances in the Champions League. Scoring a total of 7 goals. With LA Galaxy missing a leader after Landon Donovan’s retirement, Gerrard seems to be the perfect replacement. He will join up with Ex Red Robbie Keane, who has scored 20 goals and also got 12 assists. Very impressive.

Last season Steven Gerrard nearly won the Premier League, which would have been Liverpool’s first ever Premier League trophy, but unfortunatley had a poor little run towards the end of the season. He scored a total of 13 goals and assisted 13 times in the league, which was superb for a player of his age.

Gerrard has had an outstanding career, winning two FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Cup, and two UEFA Super Cups. In 2005, Gerrard was honoured as the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or Bronze Award. He has also been named in the PFA Team of the Year a record eight times, the UEFA Team of the Year and FIFA World XI three times, and was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2006 and the FWA Footballer of the Year in 2009.

He has so many great records to his name. He is, to date, the only footballer ever to have scored a goal in an FA Cup Final, a League Cup Final, a UEFA Cup Final and a Champions League Final.

Steven Gerrard has made the third most appearances in Liverpool history (With Callaghan and Carragher ahead of him). He has the second most European Appearances, 20 behind Jamie Carragher. He’s Liverpool’s third top goalscorer, two off Michael Owen. However he is Liverpool’s top goal scorer in the Champions League, with an amazing 30 goals, Dirk Kuyt is the second top goalscorer in the Champions League (with 12).

For me, the most memorable ‘Steven Gerrard moment’ was the FA Cup Final against West Ham. It was mad. I still remember the commentary. “There will be a minimum of 4 minutes added time…. GEEEERRRRRRAAARRRRDDDD”. Amazing scenes. Gerrard has been my idol growing up, the man I’ve looked up to for all of my childhood.

I’ll leave you all with this great quote from Zidane

“Is Gerrard the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Lionel Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be.”

“If you don’t have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team. ”

“When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, (Luis) Figo or Raul would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard.”

“For many years Patrick was the most complete midfielder in the world and now that award must go to Gerrard.”
